After you shared your life experiences there, I felt like a friend, coming to visit you a few times a month, to share a chat and Greek tea (er- pomegranate juice?) on your balcony. I was seeing Greece and it’s people for the first time on a personal level, watching it’s history happening with the wave of your arm over the horizon and I both cringed for you, and felt proud of you, in learning what you had to contend with within your very walls – with the lack of water, the missing basic foods, and in crossing our fingers for no more income cuts for S.
I tried to keep it from being a one-way conversation, as it has been valuable to learn and to see in real time from the street level (vs a mainstream media journalists’ observations).
I have been brought to tears over the stories you’ve shared of the hardships and events that Greeks are enduring, and have been brought to my knees in horror and mourning for more that I’ve seen since then (since you haven’t been posting updates). No other source of ‘news’ of this personal disaster on such a scale, emits the same positive light or gives the sense of resolve that you did and I do miss seeing that perspective!
The church photos are awesome. It seems like such a different reality than what is happening there. I understand the need to step back, to focus on beautiful things, to recoup and re-nourish yourself from the inside out. I hope the treks you make for the photos are rejuvenating and clarifying and bring you peace.
